William Henry Mauldin, who lived from 1921--2003, was an American editorial cartoonist who won two Pulitzer Prizes for his World War II cartoons depicting American soldiers. The two archtypical characters, WILLIE and JOE, were weary infantry troopers who stoically endured the difficulties and dangers in the field. The cartoons were extremely popular with soldiers throughout Europe and the U.S. His best-known cartoon was after the John F. Kennedy assassination. Mauldin was born in New Mexico but grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1939, he took courses at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In 1940, Mauldin enlisted in the Arizona National Guard and began drawing cartoons about regular soldiers of "dogfaces," eventually creating two cartoon infantrymen, Willie and Joe, who represented average American GIs. In the Introduction, Mauldin wrote: "During training Joe was a smart-assed Choctaw Indian with a hooked nose and Willie was his red-necked straight man. As they matured overseas during the stresses of shot, shell, and K-rations, and grew whiskers because shaving water was scarce in mountain foxholes, for some reason Joe seemed to become more of a Willie and Willie more of a Joe. My problem is that the cartoons, which I drew during my five years of Army service from 1940-1945, should have been arranged in the book in chronological order. . ." 383 pages---a GORGEOUS and RARE title.
