Description: DC COMICS DC TV / HBO Max Speculative Comic Book KeyVAL-ZOD (Kryptonian, Superman, Earth-2) DC Comics' existing Cinematic Universe that was born of director Zack Snyder's Man of Steel and Justice League will cease to be after the release of the upcoming Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom in late December, 2023, when the fifteen or so films and streaming series that comprise it will be relegated to "elsewhere" in the DC Movie Multiverse. Director James Gunn's new vision of the DCU then takes hold, at least so far as DC's primary cinematic story-telling is concerned. Other continuing projects, such as those related to The Batman and Joker films, exist only tangentially as "DC Elseworlds" properties. It's in the Elseworlds realm that the "Black Superman" project announced by actor and producer MICHAEL B. JORDAN in July 2021 falls -- and, with no word of any cancellation or change, where it still remains. According to Jordan, the film would feature DC's VAL-ZOD, a Kryptonian from the parallel world known as Earth-2 that was introduced Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott's excellent Earth 2 ongoing series (2012-2015). Val-Zod was not technically the actual "Superman" of Earth 2, who was revealed to have been captured and later corrupted by Darkseid. Val-Zod played a decisive role in ending Superman's threat in a battle that artist J.G Jones uses as the centerpiece for his cover of Earth-2 #26 (Oct. 2014). Despite his ability to also play the role in the film he intends to produce, Jordan has never been directly attached to the film in that way. With James Gunn's rebooted Superman: Legacy set to officially open the new cinematic DC Universe in mid-2025, it seems likely that that Gunn would want to give audiences time to digest his new "Man of Steel" before tossing another Superman character into the mix, be it as an Elseworlds or not. But, as with the many Batman characters and Joker characters appearing nearly simultaneously in DC films, Jordan's Val-Zod has plenty of room to debut and thrive in his own corner of the Multiverse when and if the project takes flight.
