Description: Miniature Child's Transferware Nursery Plate LINNET Song Bird Staffordshire England c 1850 This rare children's transferware non-ABC plate measures just 3-1/2 inches in diameter, transfer printed in sepia brown. The center of the plate features superb naïve imagery of a Linnet songbird, the image taken from an early illustrated childrens primer book. The plate is unmarked and the maker is unknown. It hails from the Staffordshire region of England(or possibly from Scotland) in the mid-nineteenth century. Plates like this were made as gifts for children and rewards of merit, used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their imaginations in the 19th century. The plate is in great condition with a bit of roughening along the edge, but no chips cracks or repairs. Not fine pottery. Minor manufacturing flaws, typical of the period. A great little piece made for a child so long ago! Sold as is, as shown and as described. We have also listed several companion plates to mix and match.
