Description: Early 20th century African Ngombe Carved Wood Headrest Backrest Tip Stool Congo Early 20th century African Ngombe Carved Wood Headrest Backrest Tip Stool Congo Early 20th century African Ngombe Carved Wood Headrest Backrest often called Tip Stool Democratic Republic of the Congo. Circa 1920. On a single peg leg, each openwork seat incised all over with parallel lines in geometric patterns, some red pigment at base, remnants of leather at corner attached with a tack, and natural raffia-like string. This appears to have some kaolin type pigment to make the incised geometric lines more visible, and may have some kind of oil used as a wood treatment/varnish (please see photos to see craquelure). These were often carried on hunting or traveling expeditions, and would be used to provide support, as head rests for sleeping, or as stools and backrests during meal times. Measurements: 17 1/2 x 9 3/4 x 7 1/4 inches Weight: 2 lb 2 oz Condition: Condition is commensurate with age and use. Nice, aged patina. Scuffs, cracks and minor losses throughout.
