Description: Early 1900s Dogrib (Northern Athabascan) beaded dress belt. This belt had an old cardstock tag attached, with the following information: "Woman Dress Belt DogRib Indians - Mills Lake N.W.T. c - 1924 - (Mint) Col: By R.C. In 1940's""NWT" on the tag is a reference to the Northwest Territories in northern Canada. The Dogrib, or "Tlicho" (an adaptation of the Athabaskan pronunciation) are a Dene First Nations people. Early Athabascan beadwork consisted of simple geometric patterns. Later beadwork was done in floral designs, influenced by the French in the 18th and 19th centuries. This fully beaded belt is done in geometric designs, with multi-colored beads forming layers of diamonds. The beads are double-threaded, with an overlay stitch attaching them to the cloth backing. Soft pliable hide and leather thongs are sewn to the belt on each end. All hand-stitched, the stitching patterns and thread colors may be seen on the backside of the belt. Close inspection reveals that the round glass beads are not uniformly shaped, nor of uniform shades (e.g. the red beads are slightly different shades of red). There are also some beads that are faceted (not round) - the faceted beads we observed were some of the dark blue (or blue-black) color. The belt is 35 1/2 inches (90cm) in length (without belt thongs) and 1 1/2 inches (3.5cm) wide. Dated to the early 1900s, in excellent condition, with some light age-related wear and use.
