The seed pods can be dried and used in dry flower arrangements. Dutchman's pipe is a perennial vine. It needs to be grown on some sort of support like a fence or trellis. It will cover a fence and can be used for privacy. It has dark green heart shaped leaves. The flowers are about 3 inches across. This vine thrives in full sun or partial shade with little or no care. It will grow in most any type of soil. In northern locations protection is needed in winter. In frost free areas it grows continuously. In areas where the vine freezes it will regrow vigorously in the spring. This plant attracts the Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly. The butterfly larva will eat some leaves and then go into pupa to emerge as beautiful butterflies. The plant is the last two photos is 2 years old.
