It is only an introduction into the lives of the interesting individuals who provided the material for the book. W.J. Hutchinson who lived through the boom days at Lucky, Teton and Crestone visited with me many hours and it was through him and many other "Old Timers" who shared their lives and experiences with me, and the help of a musty old trunk from the B.A. Rolosons that their stories came to life. The main purpose of my book is to keep our old friends in our memories. I am sorry that, for one reason or another, I have not been able to remember more of them. My home has always been in Crestone and Pole Creek even though I have bad to leave occasionally for a few months at a time. I was in Crestone when the population dropped to less than fifty and watched it grow again to is present time after the Baca Grande Development began. My first Christmas, when I was six months old, was spent high in the hills ea Pole Creek where my father prospected, mined and at times worked in lie mills. As I grew up I went with him far back into the black tunnels with sly a carbide light and, in the ore bucket, descended down a shaft hun-t& of feet below the earth, and then climbed out again up the dozens of Sep, steep steps to the top. Over the years I loved every minute of the stories of the early days and I y began taking notes and recordings, and finally began to put the sites together. Although many feel I have been deprived of much of life by spending its entirety in Crestone, as the years go by I feel more privileged for having a part of it and for having had the "Old Timers" share their lives with though there may be some questions concerning times and events, this die way the "Old Timers" remembered it, and after checking I find they all pretty sharp.
