Douglas Mazonowicz Screen Print: "Sorcerer. Tassili Plateau"

Description: One afternoon in December 1959, Douglas Mazonowicz visited an exhibit of prehistoric cave art from France and was forever changed. Originally a small-time screen printing artist who lived outside London, the now-late Mazonowicz found himself deeply called to share his unique talent and legacy with students of art, anthropology, and archaeology through the life-sized reproduction of cave art from across the globe. In Voices of the Stone Age, a book written by the artist and published by Thomas Y. Crowell, Mazonowicz says, "Being an artist I was mildly curious. A quick look wouldn't hurt. I entered. Hours later and full of excitement I drove hurriedly away from London. My life had suddenly and remarkably changed. My thoughts and plans went racing ahead. We would sell the house, I would resign my job, Rotary and golf. On this day I had decided to devote my future to making accurate copies of the world's oldest masters wherever they might be found. It was quite a day." Using his highly developed silkscreen technique, Mazonowicz copied cave and rock art in astonishing detail from Spain, France, North Africa, and the United States. His home and gallery were located sequentially in Valencia, Spain, Yellow Springs, Ohio, Petaluma, California, and New York City, and it is unclear which pieces were produced where. In 1968 he was appointed Research Associate of the Carnegie Museum, and until recently, he operated the only gallery of prehistoric artwork in the world in New York. Selections from Mazonowicz's Gallery of Prehistoric Paintings: Collector Editions are now for sale here on Ebay. Unfortunately, the pieces were improperly stored for many years. Thus, the artwork is unframed and rolled up, and the edges of the pieces are often yellowed or slightly crushed. However, the images themselves are in very good condition, and many are numbered and signed. This piece, no. 25/75, and no. 39 from the collection, is titled by Mazonowicz, "Sorcerer. Tassili Plateau." The Tassili Plateau is where the original rock art panel exists, and rock artwork of Tassili is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. "Sorcerer" is a life-sized, accurately colored rendering of the original artist's work from thousands of years ago.
