Description: Dorstenia hildebrandtii This strange plant from tropical Africa has a wide distribution, is found in a variety of different habitats, and is variable throughout its range. Dorstenia belong to the Moraceae or mulberry/fig family, but they do not produce edible fruit. Dorstenia hildebrandtii forms a small fleshy caudex that sends up long narrow stems, sometimes solitary, often branching, with leaves forming at the tops of each stem. They have an appearance of a small bonsai, in that they can look very tree-like, yet small. The flowers are interesting, looking like flattened disks with rays, similar to an image of the sun. From these small flowers burst seeds that shoot across the greenhouse and readily root in just about any medium. You'll receive one of the 2”-4" rooted plants in the first six photos, bare-root, without soil or pot. The other photos are of my parent plant, from which this seedling was grown, a chubby older seedling, and a selection of some of the seedlings from this group. For best growth Soil/Medium: cactus/succulent soilLight: shade to part sun, morning sun with afternoon shadeWater: once or twice a week; can lightly dry between waterings; stop watering in winter if leafless This little caudiciform is truly tropical and can not withstand temperatures much below 50F, especially if wet. It will grow more compact and dense if exposed to higher levels of light and heat, but don’t give it afternoon sun. A light, airy medium is best to avoid overwatering in winter, when plants are prone to rotting, especially in cooler temperatures. You can water more frequently during the warmer months when the plant is actively growing. If kept cooler in the winter, you may notice leaf loss, and you should hold back watering at this time. *Shipped USPS Ground Advantage, on Mondays, excluding holidays. *Usually arrives in 3-5 business days from shipment date, depending on destination. *Combined shipping is available, contact me with your request before purchasing. *No phytosanitary certificates or other documentation will be provided.
