Description: DISSTON D-8 THUMBHOLE FINE RIP HAND SAW - 1896-1917 ERA Here is a Disston D-8 Thumbhole rip hand saw in very good condition - upper and lower horn repair and minor blemishes, pits, and stains due to age. It is filed with 8ppi rip teeth - a rare find in a thumbhole grip (although I am not positive it is the original teeth). Add this to your collection or put the finely tuned ripper to work in your till. The saw is a 26” 8 ppi rip saw. It is hand sharpened with 5 degrees of rake and 0 degrees of fleam and a very slightly breasted tooth line. The plate has some pits and staining due to age, but has been cleaned up to a mirror-like polish and sports a readable etch. The handle has a new upper and lower horn from old beech stock and colors have been blended into the handle to make the repair less visible. Only slight nicks and some user marks on back that only add to this saws charm and beauty. The handles finish was mostly intact, so it was blended with shellac into the repairs. All my saws have been refinished with care. First I clean the plate with a bit of elbow grease. If needed, I soak the saw plate in evaporust for at least 24 hours to neutralize the rust before sanding up to 2000 grit. Care is taken to save any etch. The saw plate is then waxed to protect. All efforts to save old finish are taken - just a light clean up with steel wool, a thin application of shellac, and wax. Only if necessary, the handles are stripped of old finish, sanded, oiled, and shellaced. I apply 10 coats of homemade shellac and sand with 0000# steelwool between each coat. The handles are beautiful, and feels fantastic in the hand. Hardware is sanded and polished. All of my saws are hand sharpened with care.
