The ultimate record -- the way music was meant to be heard This LP was released in 1989, Diane was releasing one album a year and 1986 yielded the standards masterwork "Timeless." LP mastering was coming into it's own around the time of this release and this album is no exception. "The Collection" was actually a series done to anthologize GRP artists. Other entries in this series includes Dave Grusin, The Yellowjackets, and New York Voices. This LP is a collection of Diane's work up to 1988; every album is represented. Diane was the jazz darling of the eighties and like that decade of keyboard driven music, all the arrangements here drip electric. "Timeless" was the ultimate in the marrage of electric and strings, synth and string mastro Jeremy Lubbock handled the bulk of arranging duties for that set, little did anyone know that his signature blending technology with orchestra sound would mark time forever. Electric keyboard aside, Diane rises above the cold hand of technology offering warmth through her perfect vocal delivery. "Louisana Sunday Afternoon" is one of the newest songs on this set and while the song is arranged in a then dated Fender Rhodes piano, the tempo, sax solo, and Diane's overdubbed four block vocal harmony actually works. The song was a radio hit for her. One of my favorite songs is "I'll Close My Eyes." The way it opens, with Diane singing accapella and the quiet building of the backing instruments makes this song, along with her emotional reading, so intimate. This LP, all the while representing the electric arrangements that permeated her work with GRP, is an excellent overview of this wonderful singers work.
