They were famous for their hospitality. Their home was the scene of many parties and balls. On such occasions the entry hall doubled as a ballroom. The long, narrow space, stretching from front to back of the house and linking the 2 huge porches provided ample space for line dances, called dances and room left to spare. Over the years small changes were made to the house, closets built into bedrooms, the rear porch partially enclosed. Behind the house a carriage house was built with rooms over it. A separate small servants’ house burned down. These changes are recorded on these drawings. The prints you are purchasing are crisp, high resolution black line copies on white bond paper. The original drawings were delineated in 1934, with the beautifully draftsmanship typical of that time. This extensive set of 8 drawing sheets includes a site plan, 2 floor plans, 4 elevations, and many exquisite Greek Revival details, of a type so hard to find. Of special note are the ironwork details and the plaster ceiling decorations. The original drawings rest in the Library of Congress. Any photos shown in the description are informational only and NOT included in this order, which consists only of architectural drawings. As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. The house is skillfully designed for a southern climate. The first floor is raised several feet above the damp ground, with good ventilation under the porch floors and into the basement. The entry hall, stretching from front to back, provides cross ventilation for the whole house. Each principal room has windows on at least 2 sides, again for good ventilation. This house would be most suited for a flat or low sloping lot. It would be comfortable in a suburban or country setting. The drawings include the detached carriage house which has 2 bedrooms in its upper level. Including porches, this house has outside dimensions of approximately 61’x65’. Please visit my other auctions for many other drawings I am offering. I have house plans in wide variety of styles including Colonial, Craftsman, and Prairie, as well as plans of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Irving Gill, Purcell & Elmslie and others.
