Desert Drums: The Pueblo Indians of New Mexico 1928 Leo Crane 1st Edition HCDJ

Description: Leo Crane (1881-1966?) was an Indian Agent at Keams Canyon, AZ, for the Hopi and Navajo from 1911-1919. He then worked at the Crow Creek Reservation, SD, the Colorado River Tribes Agency, and, in the 1950s, as a tour guide at Boulder Canyon Dam. He wrote two books: "Indians of the Enchanted Desert" (1925) and "Desert Drums: The Pueblo Indians of New Mexico, 1540-1928" (1928). Crane's idea of proper stewardship of the tribes included forced removal of children from their families so as to "civilize" them in boarding schools. Crane was much hated among the Hopi and Navajo for his oppressive tactics and for such opinions that the moral standards of Indians were no better than those of their beasts.
