Description: Delightful Antique Anglo-Indian Vizagapatam Trinket Box c1900 This Anglo-Indian wooden trinket box is typical of pieces from Visakhapatnam formerly known as Vizagapatam. This box is rectangular in form supported on paw feet with a domed hinged lid. The body of the box is made of a dark coloured or stained wood. The sides and lid are decorated with a thin veneer of ox bone open fretwork and bands, both with some black enamelled detail. The detail extends to the base of the box. The veneers are held in place with pins. The box has the original lock in place, but the key is missing. The four feet are also carved from ox bone. The center of base has been covered with velvet. The box also retains almost all of the veneer design detail, some of the banding is broken or missing. Some of the enamel is worn. The hinged lid has a shallow dome, the hinges are in good condition and the lid closes neatly in place. Internally the box is clean and free of any stains or odours, the lid has a blue velvet lining. This was probably made for export in the late Victorian period or early Edwardian period. The condition is generally good, with damage as described through genuine age and use, it remains presentable overall, but could benefit from light restoration. The box measures 18.7cm by 9cm by 5.7cm including the feet and is 17.6cm by 7.7cm by 5cm tall excluding the feet. A stylish collectable box. Please see pictures for more details.
