It is made of aluminium and weighs 1.5g. The coin has a diameter of 21mm and a thickness of 2.1mm. The coin has a round shape and a milled finish, with medal alignment. The design is rich with communist symbolism. The obverse of the coin features the State Emblem of the German Democratic Republic, which is a hammer and compass surrounded by a ring of ears with a ribbon and the country name around the rim. The reverse of the coin features the face value of 10 Pfennig, two oak leaves, the mintmark above the value, and the date at the bottom. The edge is smooth.
