Description: This real photo postcard features celebrated American stage actor, David Warfield (1866-1951). His career spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was known for his compelling portrayals of ordinary people. He did so with naturalistic style and deeply human performances. He was born in San Francisco, California to German-Jewish immigrant parents. He developed an early interest in performing. After leaving school, he worked as a clerk and errand boy, but his aspirations for the stage never waned. He began his theatrical career in vaudeville, performing humorous sketches and monologues. His big breakthrough came after he was "discovered" by impresario, David Belasco. Belasco discovered him in 1900. became his mentor and helped him launch into legitimate theater. One of Warfield's most famous roles was in "The Music Master" (1904). Warfield played a struggling German immigrant music teacher. The play ran for over 600 performances, establishing Warfield as a major star. Other successful and notable productions followed, including "The Auctioneer" (1901), a drama that allowed him to demonstrate his versatility. Warfield became known for his careful character studies. Warfield resisted transitioning into film, preferring the intimacy of live theater. In 1921, he admitted that he turned down an offer of one million dollars to appear in a film. He said he already had enough money and that he knew he could act on the stage but he was uncertain about his talent as a screen actor. He retired from acting in the 1930's. He was a private individual who kept a low profile outside his theater work. He lived modestly and invested much of his earnings into real estate and philanthropy. This postcard was published by the Rotograph Company as part of a series (no.B317). The firm was located in New York City.
