Description: This is a beautiful and highly sought after original print of David Roberts showing a depiction of The Doorway at Baalbec in Lebanon. Lithograph is from plate 81, produced by Day & Son from the 1855 print. See below for historical details. David Roberts (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter who traveled in 1838 to Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan, and Lebanon to collect drawings that would later to be produced into paintings and lithographs. This was to capitalize on the fact that Egyptian imagery was much in vogue at the time among collectors, travelers, and lovers of antiquities. Upon his return, the resultant large folio editions of "The Holy Land" and "Egypt and Nubia" are considered the greatest lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. Please see detailed photographs to assess imperfections. Additional images available on request.
