Info on this work from different sources on the internet (including ebay) : David Roberts RA (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841. (Picturemcom ) "David Roberts's most famous work, Views in the Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, & Nubia, was published by E. G. Moon in London between 1846 and 1849. This work is known for its extremely detailed duotone lithographed plates which depict various scenes of the Holy Land and the Middle East.Roberts journeyed to the Holy Land in 1838 where he spent much time depicting the architecture, costumes, and landscapes that he found there. The culmination of all his efforts, Views in the Holy Land.., is indeed one of the greatest travel works ever completed. George Croly wrote the wonderfully descriptive text, when available, and Louis Haghe turned Roberts's drawings into the magnificent lithographs seen here.David Roberts truly introduced the western world to Egypt and the Middle East through this work. The lithographs were produced from his on-site drawings of temples, landscapes, and historic monuments. He was the first Westerner granted permission to enter many of the sacred mosques or monuments. He completed his sketches over an 11 month journey between 1838 and 1839. " 'The temple of Luxor was the main satellite of the huge sacred complex of Karnak, to which it was connected under Netanebo I by a majestic avenue of human-headed sphinxes almost two miles long. During the 19th dynasty Rameses II completed the temple by adding the great colonnaded courtyard with the axis towards the east, preceded by the huge front pylon decorated with reliefs portraying his victory against the Hittites at the battle of Kadesh. In front of it he erected two obelisks, covered with propitiatory inscriptions and scenes of offerings to Amun, which were donated to France by the Pasha of Egypt Mohammed Ali.' Fabio Bourbon (ed). Yesterday and Today: Egypt. Swan Hill Press: London, 1996, p.156. Translated by A.B.A., Milano. Roberts's Holy Land has a worldwide reputation. The drawings and watercolours from this sketching tour by David Roberts of the Holy Land and Egypt were collated together into folios and released over a seven year period between 1842 and 1849 by the publisher F.G. Moon from 20 Threadneedle Street London.
