A watercolor by Basie recently sold for over $1,300 (Clars Auction in November 2015). Early work—born in 1939 and the work is dated 1953—the artist was 13 or 14 when he painted this work (we suspect 13 because that’s the number in the bottom right next to his name). Beautiful modernist work, depicting a village with mountains in the background. Watercolor on paper. Great vintage condition—no tears or folds. Approximately 14x21 inches. Unframed. Born in 1939, in Indiana, David grew up in California, and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The Cooper Union School of Art, NYC in 1966. In 1957, at age 17, the artist’s talent was recognized, and he was given a major one-man exhibition at the Grand Central Art Galleries, Biltmore Hotel, located in Grand Central Station, New York. David graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1957, and from Claremont Men’s College and Pomona College in 1960. During high school and college, he designed and decorated parade floats for the City of Santa Barbara, CA. David Baise studied at the Art Students League, NYC, during 1960 -62, and at The Cooper Union from 1962 to 1966.
