Judith Jamison, a pioneering Black dancer, is best known for her affiliation with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, first as a dancer (1965-1980), then as its artistic director (1989-2011). Mark Morris danced and choreographed in many genres and mixed them eclectically; in 2008 he was responsible for the world premiere of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet with its original happy ending (1935) at Bard College. Baryshnikov and Vasiliev are two of the great male Russian ballet dancers in the second half of the 20th century; the former emigrated to the U.S., while the latter stayed with the Bolshoi in Moscow. Photographer Jack Mitchell achieved particular recognition for his extensive documentation of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, but he was also a notable celebrity photographer. Cancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones is best known for his controversial 1996 performance piece Still/Here, a response to the AIDS epidemic, to which his personal and professional partner Arnie Zane had fallen victim in 1988. Anton Dolin, a British dancer and (later) choreographer, enjoyed the support of Serge Diaghilev, who also coined his "Russified" stage name (his actual name was Sydney Francis Patrick Chippendall Healey-Kay). Antonio (full name Antonio Ruiz Soler) was the greatest Spanish flamenco dancer of his time.
