A stagecoach rolls into the town of Christian Flats filled with arrows and dead bodies - obviously the victim of a ruthless Cheyenne attack! However, this ominous display is not enough stop a group of desperate people who are all prepared to risk death to get to Laramie for their own individual reasons. They are bank robber John Banner (Dale Robertson), a sultry dance hall entertainer Amy Clarke (Linda Darnell), her singing companion Minstrel (Regis Toomey), a prospector (Whit Bissell), United States Senator Blakely (Ward Bond) and the mysterious Carter Hamilton (John Lund). Attacked by the Cheyenne in the middle of the desert, and with their stagecoach destroyed, they are forced to take cover in a dried out creek bed battling heat, thirst, and each other as well as the bullets, arrows and knives of the Indians intent on killing them all! Though some might consider this to be a minor Western in the grand scheme of the 1950's offerings, Dakota Incident certainly makes up for any shortcomings by being an oddly structured film of intrigue. The actual "incident" of the film isn't until about the half way point and, prior to the inevitable Cheyenne attack, there is some surprisingly well-done character building for the principal players which really adds quite a bit of substance to the film - none of these people are simple throwaway characters. Each of them has a unique back story as to why they are making this decidedly perilous trip and those stories are all explored. Red Rock Canyon State Park is a magnificent setting for the film's climax, and the "Trucolor" technique really adds a vivid look to the action - none moreso than the vivacious Linda Darnell, looking rather radiant in her bright red dress while firing away at the Cheyenne. Dale Robertson and John Lund do well, but Darnell, Bond and Toomey really steal the show.
