He was born in Königsberg in East Prussia (now Kaliningrad), where he lived his entire life. He studied philosophy, natural sciences and mathematics at the local university. Later he became a professor of logic and metaphysics and taught both these subjects along with ethics, physics, aesthetics and anthropology.
