Description: Antique and very early Vaquero transferware cup and saucer with an ochre lustre border (think butternut squash color) and center image of what is probably a Spanish nobleman and two horses. Potted by Elsmore and Forster ca. 1850s or so. Love that pattern! This pattern is also known as Horse Trainer. Very deep saucer and handleless cup show age. A Vaquero is actually a cattle herder, and this scene could be inspired from Spain or the Southwest US or even South America. I have to say that potters often took some poetic license with their images on transferware -- not exactly what we think a cowboy would look like! This is an English potter, however, although I think of Elsmore and Forster more for plain white ironstone. Impressed mark on saucer. I see no issues or problems with this set -- no flakes, chips, repairs. Glaze is shiny and bright. Very few examples on a google search, and the center medallion color seems to vary. I have to think this is a very hard to find pattern -- but I also think it's amazingly gorgeous Cup is 3" high, and the saucer is 6" in diameter. Both cup and sauceer have faint paneling. Excellent color combination, great shine of the glaze. For the horse lover, and to pop up a white ironstone display on your horse farm! I also have a dinnerware plate listed and of course combine shipping, but you have to ask.See for yourself!
