Crinum Lily, Veracruz, small-size bulb

Description: DESCRIPTION: Veracruz is one of the tallest and most beautiful hybrids of crinum zeylanicum. This is an unusual plant in several regards but primarily since it is marginally self-fertile and will form seed on its own. It appears similar to a baconi type cross (C. zeylanicum x C. americanum or C. erubescens, but instead of americanum, it is supposedly a naturally occurring cross with C. loddigesianum which then backcrossed again to C. zeylanicum). it's one of our favorites from over 1000 different crinum that we grow including about 350 of our own hybrids. We regularly use it for hybridization as both a seed and pollen parent. Flowers are 6 1/2" in diameter, and we have recorded as many as 8 flowers on 48" tall scapes. The largest bulb we have is 6 1/2" in diameter, and mature bulbs typically produce 4-6 offsets per year. The scapes are sturdy and do not flop over easily. Veracruz is a great late spring to early fall bloomer. Ours have bloomed May-October in zone 9. BACKGROUND: This bulb was found by the late, famous Dr. Thad Howard, author of the book, Bulbs For Warm Climates, and featured on page 74. The flower is an open star, very much like americanum, and it is not quite as tender as zeylanicum. Similar named clones are Marisco, Maximillian, and Southern Belle. We have both Marisco and Maximillian available for sale. Typical of zeylanicum hybrids, the red stripe is darker towards the edge of the flower and fades as it gets near the center where almost all other striped crinum have stripes that fade towards the edge of the flower. GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a somewhat tender, but easy to grow bulb that will do well along the Gulf Coast. It tolerates a wide range of soils but needs warmer temperatures (probably OK down into the high teens), at least to zone 8 (planted deeper and mulched). Zone 9 or above should require no special care. Blooms come in mid-summer and continue, on and off, into the fall. They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, and they will also make excellent container plants. They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a small-size bulb at least 1 year old and about 1" in diameter which should bloom within 3 years. Crinum do not like to be moved, so it might temporarily lose its leaves and can take a year just to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom.
