Crinum Lily, Monsoon Star, medium-size bulb

Description: DESCRIPTION: Monsoon Star is a hybrid cross of Latifolium and asiaticum. When mature, it makes and imposing statement and is prized, not only for the beautiful flowers and nice foliage, but because so many flowers open at the same time. This is a rare, and almost impossible bulb to find, unless you trade with another crinum collector. The flowers are white with a dark pink stripe. We grow 3 different forms but the flowers are very similar. We have recorded blooms in September - December. We have observed as many as 20 flowers on scapes to 22" tall. Our largest bulbs have measured over 3" in diameter. It grows in tight clumps and offsets readily when in excellent growing conditions with a mature bulb producing several offsets each year. Our original bulb formed 26 offset bulbs over a period of several years. We grow over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: This plant originally came from a collector who found it growing in Miami, FL. Originally it was believed that it was the actual species latifolium, but now, the best we can determine, we believe it is actually a hybrid of latifolium and asiaticum. Latifolium is a close cousin of zeylanicum and is commonly found in India. The amount of variation in this species is poorly understood. For awhile from the 50's to the 90's, C. latifolium and several other related species were considered my many botanists to be variations and synonyms of C. zeylanicum. Once it became clear that C. latifolium has been resurrected, the name was changed, because they are more closely allied with that species. It remains to be seen if the other synonymous species will be resurrected as well such as Crinum insigne, speciosum, herbertianum, careyanum, moluccanum, and longistylum, but for now C. latifolium is as close as it can be placed. GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Latifolium blooms almost exclusively in the last few months of the year. They do fine with our mild freezes into the 20's here northeast Florida, zone 9, but we think they might be more tender than most crinum and we recommend caution below zone 8, maybe keeping them as a pot plant and protecting them from freezing in the winter. Otherwise, they are very hardy. They are an easy to grow bulb requiring no special care...just plant and forget, like most crinum. It tolerates a wide range of soils but prefers rich soil. Bulbs can survive nicely out of the ground for very long periods if allowed to dry. Like most crinum they prefer full sun, but partial shade is OK. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a medium-size bulb at least 2 years old and about 1- 1 1/2" in diameter which should bloom in about 2-3 years. They don't like being disturbed, so it could take one year to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom.
