Crinum Lily, Goweni, Roger Croker Memorial, medium-size bulb

Description: DESCRIPTION: This goweni hybrid is similar to 'Bob Stover', 'Hoboken' and 'Massey's Pride', but the pink stripe is a bit darker. This will also form massive 7 - 8" in diameter bulbs. These offset moderately and a bulb of that size would be at least 10 years old. The goweni hybrids are especially nice with the light pink stripe on the inside and keel of the bud and the "fancy" recurved petal tips, making them look more delicate than the herbertii hybrids (C. scabrum x C. bulbispermum). We have recorded as many as 14 flowers on 36" tall scapes, so it is also the tallest of the goweni types that we grow. Goweni bloom late May, June, July and sometimes in September (I have never had any August blooms). It will form large, beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years. It is one of the more attractive of the over 1000 different crinum that we grow including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: Goweni is a cross of C. bulbispermum x C. zeylanicum. It is a quite distinct and unique hybrid first crossed in 1820 in England by J. W. Gowen. This was one of the earliest crinum bulbs to come to the southern US in the early 1800's. The cross has been repeated many times over the years, so there are many slight variations in circulation depending on the genetics of the parent plants which can vary greatly. This bulb was found by Rodger Croker and he gave it the temporary name 'Popham clone'. Some thought it was a some type of herbertii hybrid (a cross of bulbispermum and scabrum) crossed back onto another species such as bulbispermum, and it was never properly identified. I'm almost certain this is a fine goweni cross. The bulb was passed around to other collectors, and the pollen was used for other crosses (We have not been successful with the pollen after just a few attempts.) After Rodger died, the bulb was named in his honor. GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a semi-hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils and cool temperatures, at least to zone 7 and probably zone 6 with heavy mulching in the winter. Because it has bulbispermum in its parentage, it is more cold hardy than most crinum. They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, but they will also make excellent container plants. They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a medium-size bulb at least 2 years old and about 1 1/2" in diameter that should bloom within 2 years. Crinum do not like to be moved, so it can take a year just to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive. The photos show the plant in various stages of growth. Please feel free to contact us for additional information, and click on "Me" following our star rating.
