Description: DESCRIPTION: We grow over 50 distinct varieties of bulbispermum ranging from pure white to some with light pink stripes including some that open light the first day and then turn a blush pink the second or third day. True bulbispermum, the species, grow in the southern parts of Africa and almost never form offset bulbs, just seeds, but bulbispermum varietes crossed with each other bulbispermum or hybrids that are crossed with other species of crinum which can look just like a bulbispermum often form seeds but also will form new offset bulb from the base of the mother bulb. "Chessking" is one of these later bulbs that forms ample seed and some offsets every year. Most of these hybrid bulbs have never been named but have been passed around for many decades. Bulbispermum are the most cold hardy of all crinum and larger bulbs can survive outside in the ground as far north as Indiana and New York, cold hardiness zone 5. Many, many hybrids have been done with bulbispermum such as herbertii (scabrum and bulbispermum), eboraci (bulbispermum and asiaticum), goweni (bulbispermum and zeylanicum), and poweiill (bulbispermum and moorei). These common crosses are given these "grex" names, but there are many other less common crosses that don't have grex names. One thing all of the bulbispermum crosses have in common is a greater tolerance for cold. A very distinguishing feature of a bulbispermum species bulb is the long, tapering and pointed grey-green leaf. This trait is usually found in all bulbispermum crossed with other bulbispermum but in the grex crosses the leaf color is mostly green. In any case, almost all of these keep their leaves even in freezing temperatures where some or all of the leaves will freeze on most other types of crinum. Chessking has a white, trumpet-shaped flower with a light reddish-brown stripe on the keel (outside of the bud, back of the flower) and is almost white inside. By the second day the inside turns slightly pink with a light rose center. It blooms March-June but can bloom as late as October here in zone 9 (northeast Florida). We have recorded as many as 15 flowers on scapes as tall as 30". The bulbs grow to about 5" in diameter after about 10 years. Bulbs will form occasional new offsets and large quantities of large, green seeds the size of marbles. We grow over 1000 different varieties of crinum, including over 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: Chessking is what we call a "found" crinum, since it was found growing on a lady's property in Texas. Her name was Mrs. Jordan and the person finding the bulb named it "Mrs. Jordan's Red". After growing it for some years we gave it a name for marketing purposes. Since it seems to bloom pretty true to form from seed, we do not distinguish the offset bulbs from the seedlings that we sell, although, technically, offsets (are identical to the mother bulb, a "vegitative" offset) are different than seeds where each seed is genetically unique. Species plants are not given common names but hybrids can be named. When we put hybrids into general circulation, if the bulb has not already been given a name, we make up a name to avoid any confusion. Unfortunately, sometimes the same bulb is in circulation with different names, but this happens will many other types of plants. We do our best to properly identify our bulbs and minimize any additional confusion. GROWING CONDITIONS: Bulbispermum has a blooming season that extends for several months from late winter to early summer in the South and later further north. This is a very hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils from sandy to swamp, extended dry periods, and will tolerate freezing weather to zone 5 if the bulb is planted deeply. Bulbispermum is probably the most cold-hardy crinum, a trait passed to most of its hybrid forms. Bulbs can survive nicely for very extended periods if allowed to dry. They do best if planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, but they will also make excellent, large container plants, especially in colder climates where the pots can be moved inside for protection in the winter months. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on ONE small-size bulb that is at least 1 year old. Bid on as many as are available. It should bloom in 3-4 years and be planted in a permanent location about 2' apart from nearby plants, since it will eventually form a very imposing clump of bulbs. Your bulb will have leaves and be about 1" in diameter. This bulb will continue to grow for several more years until it reaches about 5" in diameter. Large bulbispermum are almost never offered and will become a favorite in your garden. There are many variations of bulbispermum so we suggest collectors try several different types. Bulbs will be freshly dug and will be shipped bare root. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive.
