Narrative: Aletheia [Alethea] Talbot Howard, Countess of Arundel (b. c. 1584 d. 1654), thus named by her godmother Queen Elizabeth after the Greek figure of truth, was the third daughter of Mary and Gilbert Talbot and youngest sister of Elizabeth Grey. In 1606, she married Thomas Howard, then Earl of Arundel and Surrey, and she was a key favourite of Queen Anne and later of Queen Henrietta Maria.42 In addition to being great patrons and collectors of art, she and her husband also maintained and significantly enlarged an important library, ultimately donated in 1667 to the Royal Society of London. 43 Lady Arundel's interest in chemical physic is mentioned by contemporaries such as Samuel Hartlib, and the inventory of the kitchens at Tart Hall, the residence that Lady Arundel had rebuilt to her own specifications, included facilities that would have enabled a wide scope of kitchen physic and chemical preparations of the kind undertaken in NATURA EXENTERATA.
