Couldn't Forget You GEORGE WHITNEY VALENTINE Young Girl, Bonnet, Embossed 1924

Description: George Clarkson Whitney was born in 1842, in Worcester Massachusetts and was the youngest of three boys. Their mother, Esther Howland, was called the “Mother of the American Valentine”. When George returned from the civil war he entered into business with his brother, Sumner, who owned a stationary store and also hand-crafting valentines as a sideline. After Sumner’s death, George renamed the business, “The Whitney Valentine Company”, and began to quickly buy up his competitors in the region. Before 1888, Whitney had bought out at least 10 competitors, most importantly his mother's and Jotham Taft’s “New England Valentine Company” He purchased the New York firms of “Berlin and Jones”, the city’s largest manufacture of valentines. He also added other holiday cards to his business and began printing calendars, and books. In 1898, the company moved to larger quarters on Union Street and the business was incorporated as the “George C. Whitney Company”. Even with a destructive fire in 1910, by 1915 “Worcester Magazine” assessed that “ninety percent of the valentines that are exchanged on St. Valentine’s Day come from Worcester. George died in 1915 and the company was taken over by his son Warren and later his grandson George but even with its success, the business couldn’t withstand the paper shortage of WWII and the largest Valentine manufacturer in American closed its doors. It read in the Worcester's paper, “Today in 1942, a tear drop touched all valentines. The George C. Whitney Co., 67 Union Street, the largest and oldest manufacturer of valentines in the world, announced it would be liquidating its business.” worcesterhistory It was, however, after this card was printed. This card is postmarked 1924 in Kreamer Pennsylvania and is in good condition with a small tear upper edge but just minor wear overall and a clean, clear, nicely colored, embossed image. The reverse is clean and addressed to Mrs Merritt Siebold from “Mother”. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
