Description: Cortland is a city in and the county seat of Cortland County, New York. Cortland, settled in 1791, was made a village in 1853 and incorporated in 1900 as New York’s 41st city. Its leading industry in the late and early 20th century was the Wickwire Brothers Wire Drawing Mill, noted for its production of wire hardware cloth for use as window screen. The Victorian Chateauesque style home of Chester Wickwire is now the 1890 House Museum & Cortland Alumni Association. Cortland was also home to Brockway Motor Company, a pioneering truck maker. Begun in 1875 as "Brockway Carriage Works," it was taken over by Mack Trucks in 1956 and survived until 1977. There are many buildings in Cortland that are no the National Registry of Historical Places but the “Cortland House & Opera House” is not one of them. I could not find a thing on the Cortland House & Opera House. Like it never existed, but it is on this card.The card was published by the “Buffalo News Co.” who was an agent for the “American News Co.” and is in good condition with minor wear on the corners and edges. The image is clean and clear as is the reverse. There is no way to date this, Buffalo News started in 1905 and still is. I think it is early 1900s.
