Description: Mrs. Cora Brown Potter was one of the first American society women to become a stage actress. Her stage debut was in 1887 and she continued to act until 1919. Folklore states that Cora and her husband James Brown Potter visited the Prince of Wales during a trip to Britain around 1886. The Prince had Potter fitted for a new jacket, Potter later wore it to the Autumn Ball of a private country club in Tuxedo Park NY. This dinner jacket was a hit and so began the moniker for tuxedo.
