Description: Notions of the Americans: Picked Up By A Travelling Bachelor, in Two Volumes, by James Fenimore Cooper. Published by Carey, Lea & Carey, Philadelphia, 1828. Very good, first American books in original boards. Gray-green paper covered boards with cloth covered spine, paper labels on spine. Spines are heavily sunned and labels are scuffed to the point of mostly illegible. Edges at head and tail of board spine are crimped and with several tiny vertical closed tears, minimal fraying. Fore-edge corners and most of the outermost board edges are rubbed through. Front and back board panels are soiled and stained overall. The front-free and subsequent pages, as well as the back-free and previous pages of both books are un-opened. External page edges are age-soiled and darkened; side and lower edges are untrimmed. Some internal foxing (a bit more on the front- and back-most pages) and some smudges but text pages are unusually clean compared to similar texts. Text blocks are sound, no gutter cracks or separations. Vol I: Damp-stains along upper edge of front board panel. Previous owner's name pencilled on title page. Vol II: Small stain on front papers. Previous owner's stamp and pencilled name on FFEP. Foxing is a bit heavier in this volume but mostly in text margins and end papers. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition description. Additional photos available at your request.
