"A JEWEL IN THE BETULINUS: AN UNUSUAL TABULATA The form tabulata is characterized by quadrangular black spots arranged on whitish bands. Some of the shells have a mosaic pattern as a consequence. In this beautiful tabulata, the white is not very strong and the black spots are superbly over developed. They are not only well placed on the pale spiral bands, but they are also forming axial streaks, in one case an axial streak on the dorsum right that covers a considerable part of the shell length. Two big axial streaks on the ventral side. The result is a highly unusual jewel of a betulinus. The betulinus is a mud dweller which is uncommon throughout the range: few collectors ever collected one themselves. I never did, despite the fact I spend more than a year of my life on the bottom of the sea. Betulinus lives along the East African coasts and is found throughout the Indian Ocean and on the axis China-Australia. But the species is rare in the Pacific.
