Description: Six different types of lead rounds issued to Confederate infantry and cavalry during the Civil War. They were excavated from different Civil War battle or skirmish sites. They would have all used a paper cartridge which has not survived in the ground. They were “dropped” on the battlefield or discarded because of damage to the paper cartridge. Dropped or fired Confederate rounds are not found in the quantities that Federal rounds are. Their supplies were limited and the soldiers were much more careful. Confederate soldiers were commended if they still had a few rounds left after a battle; they made their shots count. The white patina is due to oxidation in the ground which can vary according the soil. If they rested in wet ground they still retain some of the lead color from lack of oxygen. Pine forest, like most of the Bentonville Battlefield, North Carolina; leave the rounds a brownish color from the sap over the years. The two ring Confederate .58 Gardner was made only at the Richmond Arsenal in Virginia. Confederate arsenals also produced large numbers of three ring rounds from older “gang” molds which leave casting marks. The lead was poured into the molds from the top, or sides and sometimes the bottom. The excess lead called a sprue was then cut off by hand. Some of the rounds are distinctive; the Selma Arsenal has rings very close together, the Charleston Arsenal made a “high” base with a small plug base and the molds captured by “Stonewall” Jackson at Harpers Ferry in 1861 are shorter and have a flat top. Except for exceptions like those it is hard to tell the difference in rounds that have been fired. The box sizes are 2 1/4” x 3 1/4”. The relics come in the white display boxes (with lids) with descriptions as shown. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. The documents pictured will also come with the set. Please see our "About” on front page for more information on the framing and artifacts.
