He was educated at the Taft School in Watertown, Conn., and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Mr. Rayner was introduced to art at an early age. His mother, Emily Rayner, was a director of the Worth Avenue Gallery, a Palm Beach fixture from the 1940s to the 1960s. His aunt was the celebrated New York art dealer Betty Parsons, with whom he spent many summers on Long Island. Through her, he met artists such as Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still and Jackson Pollock. In May 2017, he fulfilled a long-held dream when Parsons' work was exhibited at Alexander Gray Associates in New York. Mr. Rayner was the editorial business manager for Conde Nast for 30 years. His job provided him with a passport to exotic locales and vehicles for publishing the writing and paintings inspired by his many trips with his wife, Kathy. Among the places they visited were Cambodia, India, Morocco, Bhutan, Burma, Jordan, Egypt, France and Russia. "I started off painting watercolors while I was doing my travel articles because I could remember things I'd seen more accurately," he told the Palm Beach Daily News in 2001, when his paintings were exhibited at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach. "I could almost smell the things by looking at the paintings." His recollections of his travels were collected in the 2013 book Notes and Sketches: Travel Journals of William P. Rayner. His book of essays, Wise Women: Singular Lives that Helped Shape Our Century, was published in 1983. Whether traveling or at his homes in New York City, Palm Beach or East Hampton, N.Y., he painted almost every day. His paintings were exhibited at several galleries, most recently in November at the Chinese Porcelain Company in New York. Mr. Rayner served on the boards of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Henry Street Settlement in New York, Rhode Island School of Design in Providence and Parrish Art Museum on Long Island. For 10 years, he was president of the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons.
