REMEMBER WHEN Trolley Wires Spanned the Country, Bulletin 119 of the Central Electric Railfans' Association (1980), commemorated over forty years of CERA by revisiting in photographs many North American electric railway operations of that period. The narrative captions emphasized historical aspects of the subjects. Encouraging reader response has mandated that we present as CERA Bulletin 125 an entirely new selection of illustrations within the same time and territorial span of coverage, that is, 1939-1964 in the United States, Canada; Mexico and Cuba. In this second study many cities and systems not included in REMEMBER WHEN are represented, a truly remarkable fact when one considers that color film was new, costly and scarce until after World War II. Cameras to handle 35mm film cost much more than they do today measured in current dollars in each case! But one of the great rewards yielded by the publication of REMEMBER WHEN is that it triggered many new contributors to share their most prized photographs in this volume. The coverage of this book ends in the mid 1960s, in some ways a nadir in the history of electric railways. For it was about that time when public policy first began to recognize that transit did indeed have a permanent place in supporting the urban economy through the foreseeable future. Reserved for future books are new starts and new cars that came into existence after the mid 1960s. This would include of course: Atlanta, Baltimore, Buffalo, Calgary, Detroit, Edmonton, Lowell, Miami, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego, San Jose, Toronto, Vancouver plus others from among the many now in planning that come to life in the meantime. In CERA Bulletin 119 we said, "Not since the early days of the century has the future of the industry looked brighter." The passage of five more years has reaffirmed that prediction. Almost all of the photographs in this volume are being published for the first time. The narrative text and captions have been especially developed to emphasize the development of the rolling stock and to recognize some of the people who contributed over time to the art and science represented in street railway technology. Included as sidebars are essays featuring some milestone achievements in streetcar design and their creators. As one pages through this book, the variety among streetcars becomes obvious. Today, when mass production of standardized hardware has its own cult of devotees, it is worth noting that variety and gradual evolution (as in nature itself) also has merit in perfecting the process and its hardware.
