Description: Old document dated around 1770, Spanish Colonial Peru manuscript, 54 pages of handwriting in brown ink in early Spanish calligraphy. A modern description attached to this document reads: “Testimonio de la escritura de Treque y cambio: otorgada por el Marques de Villablanca, Mayordomo del Hospital de Santa Maria de la Caridad, - a favor – del Licenciado Juan Jose Gago del Corral, en de Agosto de 1770 ante Francisco Luque.” The pages are approximately 8 1 /2” x 12 1 /4” with writing on both sides. The sheets of paper are actually twice as wide, but they’re folded in half and bound by cord. Every other page is initialed on the side. The final page is signed by at least three people with ornate signatures. The condition of this document is used, with rips, tears, folds, creases, worm holes and other wear expected from 240+ years of life. The final page with the signatures is in the worse condition, with the bottom right corner missing. Some of the pages are difficult to read because of ink bleed-through. The first page is like letterhead, with two stamps to the upper left, and these words printed at the top: “Un quartillo, Sello quarto, un quarento anos de mil setecientos y sesenta y ocho, y sesenta y nueve. Sirve para los anos de 1772 y 1773”. There is a second page like this in the center of the manuscript. This manuscript was likely attached to a larger book, because the first page is numbered “25” at the top, and it ends at “52”. There appears to be a watermark on the first page that looks like a vase. I bought this on eBay in 2004 (item number 3749615774).I don’t know what this says. Do you?
