Description: The story of the American Volunteer Group - or "Flying Tigers" - is perhaps one of the most colorful and extraordinary chapters of the history of World War II aviation. Before the U.S. entered the war, China recruited American pilots to defend them against the invading Japanese. Flying Curtis P-40's, a first-line fighter plane of the day, the American pilots helped stem the tide of Japanese aggression, defending against enemy bombers and keeping critical supply lines open. I am offering two vintage, first edition, hardback books written by one of the key players in that story. Col. Robert L. Scott, Jr. was once called "a one-man air force." In God is My Co-Pilot, he tells the story as no one else could. Published in 1943, his book was a significant recruiting tool and was later made into a movie. The second book in this set, Damned to Glory, is focused on the airplane that became synonymous with the Flying Tigers, Scott's beloved Curtis P-40. Both books are in "acceptable" to "good" condition. (Remember, they ARE around 80 years old...) As you see in the photos, both still have their dust jackets. One photo shows the condition of the books beneath the jackets. Neither book shows any form of water damage or defaced or torn pages. This copy of God is My Co-Pilot has two distinctive features that intrigue me. One is the hand-written set of penciled notes on a small notepad sheet. You'll see page numbers with a brief description of the topic of that page. I have no way of knowing, but these notes have the feel of having been made by someone very familiar with the people and the actual events. The second intriguing thing is the signature in the front of the book. I assume this is the first owner. The inscription, which appears to have been made with a fountain pen, reads "Mauno A. Salo, 1943, Hollywood." Again, I have no way of knowing... and so I make no claims... but a Google search revealed there was a Mauno A. Salo who was a Finnish fighter pilot during World War II who also wrote about his experiences. It hardly seems logical that person would have been in Hollywood in 1943, so the mystery is far from solved. I am not a professional bookseller, just a lover of books who is also fascinated with aviation history. I hope you appreciate and enjoy these rare gems as much as I have!
