It was a functioning and productive machine up until the shut down. This sale is for a very rare c.n.c. lathe with 3 servo controlled axis. If you've ever wanted to own a high quality C.N.C lathe with huge capacity, this is your chance. You won't find another one at a better price! The work piece capacity is 120" length x 16" diameter. If you are a hand turner who would just like to own a very large lathe with precision spindle control, this is your lathe! If you want to just turn a cylinder, for hand work, this is easy to do, and will ease you into the programing aspect. You can do turnings from small to large, and even face turnings on inboard and outboard sides. The customized dust collector, will keep your work area cleaner, and more enjoyable to work around. History of machine: The main body was manufactured by Oliver Corporation in 1985. The model no. 2257, s.n. 206950.A copy of the birth certificate can be purchased from Eagle Machinery. This is just one of two machines manufactured by Oliver that were converted to C.N.C.. Oliver did not build c.n.c. machines, but it was recognized by outsiders, that it was the perfect lathe for the upgrade. This is due to the fact that Oliver lathes had a precision sliding tool post, as a standard accessory. Oliver was the premier wood machine manufacture in the early to mid 20th century. Their machinery was regarded the World over, as the best! Oliver corporation was one of the few manufactures who owned their own forge. This allowed them to control the quality of their castings. Many Oliver machines are still in use today, since they were built to last. This particular machine was purchased by the U.S. government from Oliver, and then sent to Allen Bradley for the Electronic installation. It was speculated that the government purchased the machine for military research. While it was in their possession, it was used very little. It was eventually sold in an auction, but it was never used again until the machine was purchased 15 yrs ago. The 1985 motion control system has been updated it to today's technology. Many improvements and features have been added, such as dust seals, a dedicated dust collector, along with other improvements. This lathe has a "True" servo controlled spindle which allows for precision control of speed as well as rotational position. Full 3 axis coordination allows for a wide variety of machining options. The machine has many accessories which are used to extend the capabilities of the machine. Two of the accessories allow a router to be mounted to the tool post for ornamental work on a turning. Except for some chipped paint, and light rust in some places, this machine is fully functional, and was used by our company to manufacture porch columns, table legs, finials, balusters etc. Some of the turnings that we offered had ornamental work, such as, roping, and fluting. This particular C.N.C. offers the best of both Worlds. Hand turners can use the automated part to turn a cylinder, and then do hand work on the rest of the work piece if needed. Two accessories not shown, allow for a very long work piece to be steadied on each side of the turned area. The tool box, doubles as a storage area for all of the tools and accessories, as well as providing a computer control station. C.N.C. wood lathes having the capabilities of this machine can cost over 200K new. Though this machine does not come with a warranty or factory direct support, a list of support sources will be provided to the new owner of this machine. Replacement parts are readily available and there are numerous repair shops that cater to c.n.c. technology. The original hardware is in excellent shape, and this machine can be kept running as a productive machine indefinitely! Ways to program the machine: This machine uses a Galil motion controller. The motion controller resides in a p.c.i. slot, in a standard Dell computer. As with all motion controllers, it has a native programing language. This controller uses "D.M.C." commands sent via a terminal interface and a keyboard. This was our primary software, but is not the only method of controlling the machine. The lathe will also come with control software made by CamSoft (CNC Plus). This software can run g-code programs, and offers a virtual control panel for easy operation. We did not use the CamSoft software as our primary tool, and the new owner of the machine will have to update it to the latest version before this software can be used. With an update, you will get technical support, along with their cad design software. If you are new to CNC machines, this is probably your best choice. This company also offers hardware technical support for machines of this type that use Galil motion controllers, and can help you, as you learn the process of CNC machining. In addition, many "ready to use" programs for turning, porch columns, table legs, finials, balusters, spindles and more, can be purchased separately. Seller phone assistance following the sale will also be available, for setting up the machine or any troubleshooting which might be necessary.
