The outer border of the clasp was adorned with white, red, and deep green enamel, and in the circuit are eight saints, written on small pieces of paper, mounted on pink silk, and each covered with a glass. It was worn in continuous official use in his many kingdoms and through reigns extending over half a century. About the Emperor: Charles V (Ghent, 1500 – 1558) was Holy Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria from 1519 to 1556, King of Spain from 1516 to 1556, and Lord of the Netherlands as titular Duke of Burgundy from 1506 to 1555. In the Americas, he oversaw the Spanish and German colonization. The personal union of the European and American territories he ruled was the first collection of realms labelled "the empire on which the sun never sets". It can be argued that, at his peak, he was then the most powerful sovereign who had ever existed.
