Clark Ashton Smith was born in 1893 in Long Valley, California. He died in 1961 in Pacific Grove, California. His formal education was limited due to his suffering from psychological disorders including a fear of crowds. He was, however, an insatiable reader, and continued to teach himself after he left school. His reading included ROBINSON CRUSOE, GULLIVER’S TRAVELS, HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON, THE ARABIAN NIGHTS, EDGAR ALLAN POE, and many others. At the age of 13 he also read an unabridged dictionary word for word, studying not only the definitions of the words but also their derivations from ancient languages. Having an extraordinary eidetic memory, he seems to have retained most or all of it. He also taught himself French and Spanish. At age 17, he sold several tales to The Black Cat, a magazine which specialized in unusual tales. Writing poetry also motivated the young Smith. He became a protege of the great San Francisco poet, George Sterling. A bit later Smith came into contact with literary figures who would later form part of H.P. Lovecraft’s circle of correspondents. These men included Samuel Loveman, George Kirk, and Donald Wandrei. In 1920 Smith received a letter from H.P. Lovecraft which began a 15-year friendship which included much correspondence. Between 1929 and 1934 Smith wrote more than 100 short stories, most of which were weird horror or science fiction. Most of Smith’s fiction falls into one of the four worlds that he created: Hyperborea, Poseidonis, Averoigne, and Zothique. Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard also became correspondents between1933 and 1936. Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, and H.P. Lovecraft became the three members of the great triumvirate of authors published in Weird Tales magazine. In 1942, August Derleth, the co-founder of Arkham House, published Smith’s OUT OF SPACE AND TIME. Derleth (with Arkham House) and later, Arkham House, would go on to publish 13 volumes of Smith’s fiction and poetry. Beyond his writing, Smith also became an expert in sculpture, beginning in 1936 and continuing throughout the rest of his life. In fact, some of Smith’s sculptures were featured via photographs on the dust jackets for some of his books. Clark Ashton Smith was (and remains) a giant of science fiction, fantasy fiction, and horror fiction as well as being one of the most important Arkham House authors in history. Clarke Ashton Smith was the author of such great and famous books as THE STAR-TREADER AND OTHER POEMS (his 1st book), ODES AND SONNETS, SANDALWOOD, OUT OF SPACE AND TIME (an Arkham House book), LOST WORLDS (an Arkham House book), GENIUS LOCI AND OTHER TALES (an Arkham House book; offered here), THE DARK CHATEAU (an Arkham House book), SPELLS AND PHILTRES (and Arkham House book), THE ABOMINATIONS OF YONDO (an Arkham House book), TALES OF SCIENCE AND SORCERY (an Arkham House book), and many, many others. Leon Nielsen. ARKHAM HOUSE BOOKS: A Collector’s Guide. (Forward by Barry Abrahams). 2004. “GENIUS LOCI AND OTHER TALES, by Clark Ashton Smith. Third collection of weird stories by the author. (1948). 228 pages. 3047 copies printed. Cover price: $3.00. Jacket art by Frank Wakefield. The author’s third collection of weird and fantastic tales, primarily written between 1930 and 1935. No Arkham House reprints. [2004 estimated price]: $250.00.” From the dust jacket: “ . . . GENIUS LOCI AND OTHER TALES . . . by Clark Ashton Smith . . . of the work of Clark Ashton Smith, the late H.P. Lovecraft wrote: ‘None strikes the note of cosmic horror so well as Clark Ashton Smith. In sheer daemonic strangeness and fertility of conception, Mr. Smith is perhaps unexcelled by conception, Mr. Smith is perhaps unexcelled by any other writer, dead or living.’ The stories in this new collection of Clark Ashton Smith’s work richly support Lovecraft’s judgment . . . Here once again in these sixteen stories are the ‘gorgeous, luxuriant, and feverishly distorted visions of infinite spheres and multiple dimensions’ which have made of Smith’s work something unique in the annals of the macabre in American letters. Here again are tales of Hyperborea, Zothique, Averoigne, Atlantis, Xiccarph, and other vanished worlds of Smith’s creation. Here are such unforgettable tales as ‘Vulthoom,’ ‘The Colossus of Ylourgne,’ ‘The Charnel God,’ ‘The Black Abbot of Puthuum,’ ‘ The Weaver in the Vault,’ and others . . . The worlds of Clark Ashton Smith’s stories exist in a time-stream parallel to and in part belonging to that same great world of Cthulhu and Yog-Sothoth and their weird company created by H.P. Lovecraft. Like the stories in OUT OF SPACE AND TIME and LOST WORLDS, these tales are brilliantly conceived and executed in a style that is unique in our time. Smith’s tradition is that of Lord Dunsany, but there is nothing of imitativeness in his work; his is original in concept and performance, and whether he writes of terror and horror, of whimsy or fantasy, his stories remain far above the level of the average tale in the genre . . . “ From the lower front flap of the dust jacket: “The jacket is the work of Frank Wakefield, a young West Coast artist.” From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . CLARK ASHTON SMITH . . . Clark Ashton Smith (1893- ) is a native Californian. At his home in that state Smith writes his striking poetry and prose, draws, and creates his unforgettable and unique sculptures, many of which depict characters from the mythology of his own stories as well as those of his late friend, H.P. Lovecraft . . . Mr. Smith has contributed to many magazines. His prose, poetry, and drawings have appeared here and abroad, in such magazines as ‘The Yale Review,’ ‘Poetry,’ ‘The London Mercury,’ ‘Wonder Stories,’ ‘The Black Cat,’ ‘Weird Tales,’ ‘Strange Tales,’ ‘Smart Set,’ ‘Munsey’s,’ and many others. One of the few living masters of the macabre short story, Clark Ashton Smith’s work has appeared in many anthologies, among them SLEEP NO MORE, STRANG PORTS OF CALL, THE SLEEPING AND THE DEAD, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOON, DARK OF THE MOON: POEMS OF FANTASY AND THE MACABRE, and others. He is the author of four collections poems, all now out of print -- THE STAR-TREADER, ODES AND SONNETS, EBONY AND CRYSTAL, and SANDALWOOD AND OTHER FANTASIES; and of three collections of his memorable stories -- OUT OF SPACE AND TIME, LOST WORLDS, and GENIUS LOCI AND OTHER TALES . . . Arkham House is planning for early publication a fourth collection of his tales, THE ABOMINATIONS OF YONDO, a further as yet untitled collection, and a volume of his SELECTED POEMS, which Mr. Smith is slowly assembling and revising for publication . . . “ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A NEAR FINE book in an outwardly VERY GOOD+ to NEAR FINE dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its traditional Arkham House Holliston Black Novelex binding with gilt lettering on the spine of the book. The gilt lettering on the spine of the book is slightly dulled, but remains completely and easily readable. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $3.00. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. The dust jacket has undergone some relatively minor restoration that has been accomplished by a professional paper conservationist using archival, non-acidic materials. The restoration is mainly at the edges head and heel of the spine panel of the dust jacket. The spine panel of the dust jacket also shows some browning, but less than is usually encountered. The front and rear panels of the dust jacket are bright and attractive; they appear to be in ABOUT FINE condition. This soft paper dust jacket is quite prone to soiling, tearing, and general wear; this example of this dust jacket is much better than is usually encountered. The dust jacket artwork is by the West Coast artist Frank Wakefield. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF SCARCE ARKHAM HOUSE 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF CLARK ASHTON SMITH 1st EDITIONS! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I’m not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles.
