Description: Venice: Queen of the Adriatic. Copyright 1893 by Estes & Lauriat. Published by Dana, Estes & Co., Boston. Illustrated with photographs. Hardcover, 380 pages. Top edge gilt. This is not the first edition, but it was still published before 1917. We know this because of the beautiful handwritten inscription on the front free endpaper, under a "Merry Christmas" sticker: "To my dear old Partner, remembering the happy hours we spent 'Over There.' M.C.A. 1917." Clara Erskine Clement Waters (1834 - 1916) was a prolific American author of travel books. With independence that was unusual for a woman of the time, she made extensive tours in Europe, visited Palestine and Turkey in 1868, and traveled around the world in 1883/4. Condition: Aside from the inscription, the text is clean, with no ink names, pen/pencil notations, or similar flaws. A bookmark was placed between pages 77 and 78, which left a darkened spot. There is a slight edge tear on page 45-46, which does not affect the text. The photographs are protected with tissue paper. There is some fading to the gilt on the spine, and modest wear at the corners and top & bottom of the spine. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
