Description: Claire Hamill Biography by Gary Hill One House Left Standing Claire Hamill released her first album in 1971, called One House Left Standing. Her next album was entitled October, and was released two years later. The following year, Hamill released Stage Door Johnnies. Abracadabra came out in 1975. When her career started to lag due to punk rock fever in the music business, she joined up with Wishbone Ash, recording two albums with them. She left that group in 1981, returning to her solo career. The first fruit of that labor was Touch Paper, which came out in 1983. Her follow-up, Voices, came out in 1986. Four years later, her next disc was released, Love in the Afternoon, followed by 1998's Summer. Voices Review by Stewart Mason Released in 1986, Voices is a peculiar departure from Claire Hamill's earlier pieces of singer/songwriter art rock. As the title suggests, this is an entirely a cappella album, with Hamill's multiply overdubbed voice taking the place of conventional instruments, including not only the usual keyboards and strings, but the bass and drums as well. Hamill's voice is stretched and mutated into absolutely unrecognizable sounds throughout the record: Play the Cocteau Twins-like "Moss" to someone unfamiliar with the record and they would likely not be able to recognize that the drums and saxophone are actually manipulated vocal tracks. Though the album is a remarkable technical tour de force (particularly considering that this was recorded in 1986, when samplers were in their infancy), as a collection of songs, it's mostly just all right: passable new age pop that drones along pleasantly for three-quarters of an hour but never particularly engages the listener. However, if you've always loved the vocal textures on Enya's albums, Voices will sound familiar and appealing to you. Recorded at Coda Landscape Studios GOLDMINE GRADING MINT ---- It should appear to be perfect. No scuffs or scratches, blotches or stains, labels or writing, tears or splits. Mint means perfect. NEAR MINT ---- Otherwise mint but has one or two tiny inconsequential flaws that do not affect play. Covers should be close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident: slight ring-wear, minor denting to a corner, or writing on the cover should all be noted properly. VERY GOOD PLUS ---- The record has been handled and played infrequently or very carefully. Not too far from perfect. On a disc, there may be light paper scuffs from sliding in and out of a sleeve or the vinyl or some of the original luster may be lost. A slight scratch that did not affect play would be acceptably VG+ for most collectors. VERY GOOD ---- Record displays visible signs of handling and playing, such as loss of vinyl luster, light surface scratches, groove wear and spindle trails. Some audible surface noise, but should not overwhelm the musical experience. Usually a cover is VG when one or two of these problems are evident: ring wear, seam splits, bent corners, loss of gloss, stains, etc. GOOD ---- Well played with little luster and significant surface noise. Despite defects, record should still play all the way through without skipping. Several cover flaws will be apparent, but should not obliterate the artwork. POOR ---- Any record or cover that does not qualify for the above "Good" grading should be seen as Poor. Several cover flaws.
