Description: This offering is for a historic collection based upon a participant of the beginning of the Civil War with the formation of the Republic of South Carolina, December 20, 1860 and on into the early years of the Southern Confederacy or Confederate States of America. This collection is centered around the Steam Tug "Aid" based in Charleston, South Carolina, and her captain, Captain Thomas Payne, a Charleston "Marine". Offered in this collection is a handwritten rations or provisions list aboard the Steam Tug "Aid" for September 1, 1859. (The Steam tug "Aid" was one of three local vessels homebased in the port of Charleston, South Carolina, that was seized by the new South Carolina Republic in 1861 to assist in the daily patrols of Charleston Harbor along with the cutter Aiken and the steamer General Clinch to prevent the United States Navy from reinforcing Fort Sumter.) Included are two photographs of Captain Thomas Payne clothed in formal attire and wearing a ceremonial emblem of Lodge rank. the collection includes four paid receipts for Captain Payne's membership dues in the La Candeur Lodge No. 36 dated 1860-1866. (The Candeur Lodge was established August 24, 1796, as Masonic Lodge # 36, one of two lodges formed in the French Quarter of Charleston and allowed to work within the French Language of operations. Interestingly, as a historic side note, check out the escape of Napoleon Bonaparte's Army commander Grand Marshal Michel Ney.)Also included is a Civil War Confederate Court of Ordinary Charleston S.C. District document This document in the offering is an assignment of Thomas Payne, of the Confederate States Marines, so-called "Charleston Marines", as the administrator of the Estate of Louisa Payne dated October 1864.
