Description: 5x5 inch glossy photo. A powder monkey boy on the Union ship USS New Hampshire, off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, 1864. A powder boy or powder monkey manned naval artillery guns as a member of a warship's crewl. His chief role was to bring gunpowder from the powder magazine in the ship's hold to the artillery pieces, either in bulk or as cartridges. The boys were typically 12 to 14 years old and were chosen due to their speed and height. A powder monkey held no official naval rank on the ships that they sailed on. FYI: The New Hampshire on April 23, 1864 and was fitted out as a storeship and depot ship of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, and commissioned with Commodore Henry K. Thatcher in command. The USS New Hampshire sailed from Portsmouth, New Hampshire on 15 June 15, 1864 and relieved sister ship Vermont on July 29, 1864 as store and depot ship at Port Royal, South Carolina, and served there through the end of the Civil War.Get this fantastic 5x5 inch photograph.
