Description: Civil War Official Documents w/orig. envelope BEAUTIFUL CONDITION Two documents from the Civil War with the original envelope. The documents have been kept in the original envelope for more than 150 years and are in mint condition. The envelope has "Official Business" printed on it and is dated December 1863. The envelope is addressed to R.J. Atkinson, Esq., Auditor, U.S. Treasury Dep't, Washington, D.C. It measures about 8 7/8" x 3 15/16". The envelope has been opened on the right side. The two documents were folded to fit within the envelope. Aside from having been folded, the documents are in beautiful condition. The first document is titled "Invoice of Subsistence Stores" and is dated December 7, 1863. It was signed by Captain James K. Scofield. The document measures 8.5" x 11" and has been folded in thirds. The invoice is for "One Head of Beef Cattle Weighing Twelve Hundred Pounds Gross." Scofield, of the 19th Pennsylvania Volunteers, served in the Civil War from May 1861 to July 1865, rising from Private to Major of Commissary. The second document is titled "Return by Paymasters and Disbursing Officers of the United States." It reports the payment to John R. Black, Clerk in the Brig. 30 Div. 6 Corps, of $25 with 75 cents tax paid. The document was signed by Clark [?] Ellsmaker and dated at Brandy Station, December 28, 1863. It measures about 10 1/2" x 16" and was folded in half, and then in thirds. Located on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, Brandy Station served as the Union Army of the Potomac’s key supply and passenger depot during the army's 1863-1864 winter encampment in this area.
