Description: Condition as seen. Academy Penn LawFeb 8th, 1865 Dear Mother, I recd your letter the same day I sent my last to you. My ring came safe also. We are having fine weather here now the sun shines so brightly that it spoils our skating & although I ought not to complain, I am afraid I grumble a little sometimes. John _____ slept with me last night & we went over to Grandma’s after. Frank & he spent the evening with us & we enjoyed ourselves very well over a pipe & pernogol. I thought of the little boy’s then & am glad that they think of me enough to miss me & I feel thankful to hear that they talk of me & I hope we four shall soon meet again. Why not bring Clorance out here. He would enjoy himself much better than in Norwich. You ask me if I am not anxious. I guess I am about as much as anybody. Frank is all well & he talks as if he wanted to se you as much as any body & when he read your letter he looked as if he would like to see you & tell you how much he misses you. He is very contented as he always is with Grandma Curtiss & he has his own way very much.I am not growing fat nor lean but am raising up tall & am stronger than I was when I left “the codfish country”, as Peter calls it. There is not much danger of Auntie’s talking me out from becoming a farmer, that is impossible for mortal men or woman to do as I think just as you do “that it is the grandest way & best way of living & that I can be independent” & that also another & better reason I shall be out of temptation & strife of the world more than I should anywhere else, don’t you think so/. Yes I am your little boy yet although I am so far away from you yet I try to do as I know you would wish to have me if you were here & I am glad you think (& I know) that I love you then you will believe my former statement much more easily than you would otherwise.I have not answered H._. Dodge’s letter yet but shall soon. Here I must end as our clock says I must to go my class. I send much love to all. Dan P.S. Auntie will writ you a lone, perhaps two.10th of FebruaryDear Sophia,This is my birthday. Danie has given me a little room in his letter as wanted to tell you that Elizabeth was confined two weeks ago today, had a son, still born. We are all very much afflicted at the loss. She is getting well very fast. My Mother is very worrisome and wants contact attention. Danie helps to take care & waits upon her and does lots of things for me. What a good boy he is, cheerful and happy, but he thinks of his Mother. He will never neglect you. He is noble hearted. I feel that I want him to be with me always. I am proud of him. When are you coming to see us? It is very cold here today.Ever, your sister,HM OliverMuch love to you & yours
