Description: Historic Grant and Lafayette Counties, Illinois were part of the lead mining region so important during the Civil War due to the demand for lead needed to produce prodigious quantities of military rifle musket minie balls. An impressive 3 pound chunk of pure galena, lead ore, from an old vein near the site of the famous Civil War lead mines near Hardscrabble, Wisconsin, in the heart of the lead mining region made famous during the Civil War and producing the lead for most of the Minie bullets used by the Union & Confederate Armies in the Civil War. The mines are long closed and this is a scarce large ore specimen, approximately 4 x 2.8 x 2" . I got this beautiful specimen of American mined galena 30 some years ago at a Mineral Point, Wisconsin antique shop and was told it came from a retired miner from the Hazel Green area, also called Hardscrabble by the prospectors.
