Description: The 2nd Vermont Volunteers, part of the notable Vermont Brigade was a very hard fought unit suffering nearly 300 killed and wounded in the War. An Original Civil War Letter from James W Bennett, a veteran of the 2nd Vermont, who was captured and a POW following the Battle of White Oak Swamp, Virginia. Bennett writes from home at Brattleboro, July 20, 1865, (having been discharged for disability in 1863) to his old comrade Lemuel Frank Liscom of the 14th New Hampshire , congratulating him on his promotion ( to 1st Sergeant) and asking him to notify Sgt (George A) Wright that Bennett lost his haversack enroute to Martinsburg (Virginia) and it contained, besides the writer's money & valuables, Sergeant Bennett's watch. He asks that Liscom inform him of the misfortune,and believes the haversack was lost in the Adjutant's tent at Winchester. He is thankful the money he sent is is safe as he has receipts from the Express Agent at Brattleboro. 2pp 8 x 11" ink.
