Description: This is a great looking CITY OF DETROIT Police Dept. commemorative challenge coin. Coin is about 1 9/16" in diameter and raised lettering on both sides. Reverse side has St. Michael the Protector, Patron Saint of Police and the words "In God We Trust". Coin is contained in an acrylic air tight holder. The Detroit Police Department, established in 1865, is responsible for the city of Detroit, Michigan. As of 2014, the department is composed of twelve precincts. In 1921, the Detroit Police Department became the first police department in the country to utilize radio dispatch in their cars. A historical marker at Belle Isle Park describes the new advancement in technology. Prior to 1973 female officers were not allowed to work for DPD in the same capacity as men.
